Pop Culture Artifact

What is popular culture and what does it mean to you?

Pop culture is everything that makes up the current culture.  This mostly consists of art, like music, movies, paintings, any medium of art.  While it is mostly made up of art, pop culture can be made up of many different things.  Pop culture can also consist of a person, a brand name, even just a product, think of the iPhone.

Why is an understanding of popular culture relevant to you in a business environment and in your present and future career?

Pop culture can be used to reach a plethora of people.  It can be used to connect with people from different backgrounds.  Pop culture is accessible for anyone, even those who do not try to partake in it.  Because of this accessibility, a leader can utilize some forms of pop culture to help people understand goals and objectives.  Currently I am a team lead, and am constantly learning new ways of leading people, and sometimes using a common movie or TV quote, or discussing a certain book, can help me connect with the people that I am leading.  This connection can help the person to open up about issues, as well as build their trust in me.  I plan to continue growing as a leader, as well as taking on roles with greater responsibility.

What would you consider to be an example of a pop culture artifact and why would you choose it?

I think this is a good representation of popular culture.  The flag is made up of many different popular logos.  I am sure every reader can recognize most if not all of the logos.  This represents the fact that popular culture makes up the culture as a whole.  These entities influence how our society has been shaped, and what it looks like today.

There isn’t one that I do not recognize; as I am sure the same goes for most people. I see restaurants, technology products, TV stations, and many more.
